Owners seek new coaches for the Kings

The Southern Kings’ bid to lure highly rated Sharks assistant coach Sean Everitt to Port Elizabeth has failed, as the owners attempt to assemble a new coaching panel to resurrect the PRO14 franchise. It is believed the Kings are planning a total cleanout of their existing coaching staff ahead of the new season as the owners bid to stamp their authority on the team.Everitt was in Port Elizabeth with the Sharks team that lost to the EP Elephants in a SuperSport Rugby Challenge clash at the Wolfson Stadium on Sunday, where he spelled out his future plans.“I was approached by the Kings two months ago,” Everitt said.“I am not leaving Durban to come to Port Elizabeth.”Though nothing has been finalised, it seems Kings head coach Deon Davids is on his way out after it was revealed that there are ongoing talks regarding his future. It is believed that a decision on Davids will be taken at a board meeting next week.Assistant Kings coach Chumani Booi, who is coaching the EP Elephants, said he was in negotiations regarding his future after talk emerged that he was also heading for the exit door at the Kings.Asked about his future, Booi said: “You know rumours. Perhaps you media guys can be the ones to answer that one for me.“As far as I know, I am still busy negotiating with the Kings in terms of my contract.“At this stage, I cannot comment on the rumours so I will leave it at that.“I will, however, still be with EP for the Currie Cup.”Kings kicking coach Henning van der Merwe has left the franchise and has joined Pearson High School’s rugby department. It is expected that more clarity on the Kings’ coaching plans will emerge when chair Loyiso Dotwana and his deputy Rory Stear return from a trip to England. The pair attended the PRO14 final in Glasgow and are said to be in negotiations to bring flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis back to Port Elizabeth from English club Harlequins.Insiders said a loan deal was being planned in terms of which the Kings would pay half of Catrakilis’s salary on a one-year deal with an option for a second year.It has been finalised that Bulls loose forward Thembelani Bholi has signed a threeyear deal with the Port Elizabeth franchise. Also joining the Kings is former Lions centre Howard Mnisi, who has signed with the side for next season. In addition to the previously announced signings of Jerry Sexton (lock) and Courtney Winnaar (fullback/flyhalf), the Kings have recruited a number of other players.Andell Loubser (fullback), Cameron Dawson (loosehead prop), Christian Ambadiang (wing), Erich Cronje (centre), Gavin Mills (scrumhalf ), IG Prinsloo (tighthead prop), Josh Alderman (scrumhalf ), Lusanda Badiyana (loose-forward) and Siyabonga Masuku (flyhalf) are all new recruits.Talented fullback Masixole Banda is also among the latest players to recommit with a contract extension.Others are: Alandre van Rooyen (hooker), CJ Velleman (loose-forward), Pieter Scholtz (tighthead prop), Ruaan Lerm (loose-forward), Sibusiso Sithole (centre), Tienie Burger (looseforward) Yaw Penxe (wing), and Tango Balekile (hooker).
