Race for league title still wide open, says Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt

With only four games remaining in the Absa Premiership season, the title race is becoming tighter and tighter.
Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes the race for the league crown is still wide open.
“We can only make 56 points. I have won the league on 54 points already but anything can happen,” Hunt said.
The Clever Boys are third on the log, level on 44 points with Mamelodi Sundowns, who still have two games in hand.
Orlando Pirates lead the pack with 50 points.
They have played 27 games, one more than the Clever Boys.
“People get leg boots, they cant walk, they can’t talk, they can’t move and they can’t pass.
“But both Pirates and Sundowns have a lot of experience, I think Sundowns has more.
“Will they [Sundowns] catch up in all the games, we don’t know.
“It’s not for us to worry about, we have to concentrate on what we have to do.
“Try to take one game, go through and do the best that we can under the pressure.”
The students kicked off their league campaign on a good note this season, finishing the first half of the season at the top of the log.
However, they slipped and lost valuable points along the way.
The slump started after they lost 2-1 to Highlands Park.
Hunt, who has four league titles under his belt, blamed his defence for the setbacks.
“Defensively, we have not been doing good.
“If you look at our first round, we conceded 11 goals in 13 games.
“I think we have 25 goals [scored] against [us] now.
“In all the games we have lost this year, we were the ones leading.
“We were up 2-0 against Golden Arrows, but the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
“In our 3-2 loss against Cape Town City we were leading 2-0 and the defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic, we were up 1-0.
“All these were home games and we lost them.
“That has never been us,” the coach said.
“Defensively, that has been our problem, we have been poor.
“We are not blessed with the best talent in the forward areas, but we have workers.
“If you score you need to defend – like we did against Chippa on Friday night.”
Hunt said Pirates and Sundowns were mastering that department as they had not conceded many goals in the last four to five games.
Asked about his plan for the remaining games, the former Supersport United mentor said: “Well, I am trying to keep my job. In this business next week you can go.
“We want to win and try and go as far as we can.
“But we also have to try and have one eye on the future a little bit.”
Hunt joined the Clever Boys in May 2013 and has won three trophies during his stay at the club – clinching the league, Telkom Knockout Cup and the MTN 8 Cup.
