Visitors take honours in Aspen event
Visitors made a clean sweep in the women’s category of the Aspen PE City marathon on Saturday.
In a close finish, Danette Smith from KPMG, Western Province, beat Renata Vosloo from Sunninghill Striders to pocket the purse of R3,000.
Annerie Kruger (Mongolia Road Running) finished third, with defending champion and multiple winner of the race Melanie van Rooyen from Richards Bay fourth.
In the men’s category, it was all local, with Gift Chigomarawa (Nedbank RC) an easy winner, finishing in 2:28:13, and Xolisa Ndlumbini (Vukani Multisport) second, more than seven minutes behind. Eric Sigxashe (Motherwell AC) was third a further two minutes behind.
Just under 1,000 runners finished the marathon, which started and finished at the NG Church in Lorraine.
The race, organised by the Crusaders Athletic Club, was an EPA Prestige and Participation League event as well was an Eastern Province championship event.
Vuyolwethu Selati (SAPS Marathon Club) was the overall winner of the 10km race, with Asanda Zamisa (Achilles AC) the first woman home.
The Animal Welfare Society, Aurora Special Care Centre and the Adopt-a-School foundation were beneficiaries of the event.
