Wicht stars in Grey win over Wynberg

THE Grey hockey team recorded their first win over Wynberg since 2010 at the weekend. Wynberg are ranked among the top five schools in South Africa.

The home team made a positive start, creating several circle entries and forcing several penalty corners in the opening minutes. From the third of these, Kurt Wicht scored from a neat variation to give Grey a deserved 1-0 lead.

Soon afterwards, excellent work down the left by Mike Anderson put Laython Coombs away and the youngster finished clinicallyto make it 2-0 at half time.

Wynberg came out firing after the break, forcing a penalty corner from which they scored.

Soon after, the Cape side netted again to make it 2-2.

Grey then endured several minutes of pressure before gradually re-imposing themselves on the game. Several outstanding chances were created, but did not produce the required result.

Eventually, it took some individual magic from Wicht to break the deadlock to put Grey in front again.

Wynberg were still not done though and Grey goalkeeper Richard Nesbit had to make a fine save to deny Wynberg in the final minute.
