Pearson excel in hockey, netball

THE Pearson girls' sports teams enjoyed a good week, with a number of notable wins.

The Summerstrand school hosted Kingswood in their annual netball fixtures on Wednesday, with the home side winning all eight matches.

The first team showed good control from the outset and played superbly to win 31-22.

On Saturday, Pearson met Collegiate in their annual derby, but unfortunately all the netball matches were postponed due to rain.

However, 14 hockey teams saw action on the day.

In the first-team clash, Pearson, under the guidance of former SA under-18 schools coach Jeanette Makkie, recorded a fine 2-1 win.

The match started with both sides playing skillful and constructive hockey.

Pearson drew first blood when Simone Upman scored in the 10th minute.

They followed this with some solid work in the midfield which resulted in Caitlin Gouws taking on the Collegiate defence with speed to finish off with a brilliant goal to make it 2-0 at half time.

The second half also produced good hockey, with Collegiate seizing their chance to narrow the gap when Naledi Mkhulisi netted midway through the half.

However, Pearson hung on to their lead for a 2-1 victory.

For Pearson, goalkeeper Anja van Eeden was in great form.

PEARSON Grade 10 pupil Bradley Gouveris shone in the recent SA Track Cycling Championships, winning three events in the U16 division.

He won gold medals in the 500m time-trial, 200m sprint and 1500m sprint, and a silver in the 3km individual pursuit.

Gouveris also received a special award for being the best U16 SA track rider and has received his South African colours.
