Brandwag score nail-biting win over Daniel Pienaar
BRANDWAG triumphed in their Uitenhage FNB Classic Clash when they pipped Daniel Pienaar 10-9 in a nail-biting schools rugby contest at Daniel Pienaar in Uitenhage on Saturday.
Daniel Pienaar were first to score when flyhalf Denver Klue slotted two penalties in the first five minutes. The visitors found themselves 6-0 down, but gained momentum with greater possession and territory.
Brandwag missed a penalty after 13 minutes, but were the first to cross the tryline 10 minutes later. Brandwag captain and eighth man Stefan Janse van Vuuren broke away from a lineout and passed to scrumhalf Brandon O'Neill, who scored in the corner.
The conversion was missed and after Brandwag missed another kickable penalty, Daniel Pienaar led 6-5 at half time.
Nine minutes into the second half, Klue extended DP's lead to 9-5 with another penalty. After 22 minutes in the second half, Brandwag flank Morney Moos made a break down the touchline and held the defence off to pass to centre Derick du Toit who scored a few metres outside the goalposts.
Brandwag's kicking woes continued when the conversion was missed again, but the visitors took the lead 10-9.
In the last five minutes, Daniel Pienaar were awarded two penalties. The first landed short and DP gave chase, but Brandwag defended successfully. The second penalty, in the last minute, was also not successful, allowing Brandwag to cling to their lead.
Framesby v Otto
IT was one-way traffic at Framesby on Saturday when the home side beat Otto du Plessis 81-0.
From the kick-off Framesby took control and led 45-0 at half time. In the end, Framesby ran in 13 tries. Flyhalf Tiaan Stander scored one of them and added eight conversions.
Framesby scrummed well and the lineouts were dominated by lock Wihan Coetzer and flank Ruben Pretorius.
Props Wessel Strydom and Botter van Zyl enjoyed the numerous opportunities to carry the ball and were among the try-scorers.
No 8 Neal Brophy kept up a high work rate throughout the match in a fine performance.
Among the backs, strong centre Malan Marais and speedy wing Rikus Zaayman gave the defenders a torrid time. Both scored two tries each, with an individual effort by Marais the pick of the day.
It was a tough afternoon for Otto but lively scrumhalf Damian de Laura showed signs he can keep a few teams busy when he gets a chance.
