Kruisfontein outclass old rivals Quins
A RUTHLESS Kruisfontein showed Harlequins no mercy as they outclassed them 57-20 in a Grand Challenge rugby clash at the Adcock Stadium at the weekend.
The Humansdorp side made their intentions known early in the game, managing to exploit some poor defensive work by the Quins outfit.
Had it been a boxing match, the Quins coaching staff would have been tempted to throw in the towel as the visitors scored five of their eight tries in the first half.
By half-time, the visitors were in the driver's seat with a 40-6 lead.
In the second half, Kruisfontein took their foot off the pedal as the heat seemed to get to them. Quins played better in this half, but were still not good enough.
ýNMMU ran in five tries against African Bombers to edge them 36-26 in a game of two halves at the university.
The game lived up to expectations. Whenever the two sides meet, they always produce a thrilling encounter.
The students started the game the stronger side and comfortably led 21-3 at the break.
The second half, however, was a different story as the Zwide outfit got into gear and worked their way back into the game.
Switching Coyi Banda from fullback to his familiar flyhalf position paid dividends for Bombers and they managed to play quicker ball to cross the tryline three times.
But NMMU did not sit back, scoring a further 15 points to claim the bonus point victory.
- At Londt Park, Progress narrowly edged Park 26-24 to register a hard-fought win.
The game could have gone either way but it was the Uitenhage side that took a 19-14 lead at the interval.
Very few chances were created in the second half with Progress only managing a converted try, while Park scored a converted try and a penalty.
The hosts came agonisingly close to stealing victory from right under Progress's nose when they missed a penalty in the dying stages of the game that would have given them a one-point win. - Mkhululi Ndamase
