Kingswood girls honoured after great hockey season

FOUR Kingswood College girls' hockey players have been honoured for their contributions to one of the best seasons for the Grahamstown school's first team.

Combining quality players with astute coaching from Jeanette Makkie, this year's first team won 22 of 28 matches, drawing three and losing three.

At a ceremony this week, Fikile Mahlati, Shannon Arnold, Siwe Kuse and captain Laura Bennett were awarded hockey honours.

Mahlati was hailed as an all-round player who contributed in all areas, but most notably in her role as a defender. She has been part of the first team for three years, earning more than 75 caps.

Arnold has played for the first team since Grade 9. In her citation, she was described as a dedicated and conscientious player who demonstrated great talent and determination in matches and at training.

She has represented EP in the U14A, U16A and U18A teams, and has earned 95 caps for the first team.

Bennett was said to be a dream for any coach to have in a team. She captained the side with dignity and passion, and has been part of the first team for four years with 50 caps.

She has played for EP teams since Grade 9 and this year she was chosen to captain the EP U18B side.

Kuse has been Kingswood's goalkeeper for the past two years, during which time she has represented EP U18A and been awarded 50 caps for the first team.
