PE pupil strikes bronze in Dubai

IT took the South African swimming team until the final event to capture a medal at the world junior championships in Dubai.

And it was close – with South Africa moving into third place after the United States were disqualified for messing up the changeover in the 4x100m medley relay.

Port Elizabeth's Chris Reid said the South African swimmers were "pumped" after breaking the medal drought.

The 17-year-old Grey High Grade 11 pupil was a member of the team which took the bronze medal at the weekend to ensure South Africa did not come away empty-handed.

Reid said they had settled for fourth place when, as they were walking off the pool deck, they heard that the US had been disqualified, moving South Africa into third place behind Japan and Russia.
