Metro urged to appoint chief financial officer
The Eastern Cape’s department of co-operative governance wants all critical vacancies in municipalities across the province to be filled by the end of next month.
This includes the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, which does not have a permanent chief financial officer.
The selection and appointment of a CFO is among critical items to be discussed at Monday’s council meeting.
MEC Fikile Xasa warned that the city’s failure to appoint a permanent CFO could result in the National Treasury rejecting any budget roll-over applications by the municipality.
Xasa said the department had been monitoring the metro’s failure to successfully convene a council meeting since March.
“I have been observing this issue at Nelson Mandela Bay at a distance. I would intervene if the municipality does not adopt a budget.
“But the appointment of a CFO is not one of the reasons that would need me to intervene,” Xasa said.
“I have noticed that on budget issues the council is smart in that they are able to avoid interventions just in time for the department to actually intervene.”
