93-year-old dame up for vintage car rally

A 93-year-old car is among the 17 vehicles to steer in a classic car rally out of the city into the surrounding countryside during the 50th Bill Milligan Memorial Trial over four days next weekThe 1926 Lancia Lambda belonging to Cape Town’s Colin Greyvensteyn is the oldest of the vintage and veteran vehicles expected to assemble at the clubhouse in Conyngham Road on Sunday for inspection before the trial kicks off on Monday morning. The Lancia spans a 54-year age difference from Jim Boggess’s 1980 Porsche 924, the newest car taking part alongside four others in the tour leg of the rally, which will run concurrently with the trial.Among the oldest is Mill Park car collector Jan Enslin’s 1931 Chevrolet Roadster, in which he will take part alongside trial partner and navigator Winston Sagar.Enslin said he bought the car in 2001 to join a fleet of his other vintage cars, including a 1910 Model T.“All you really need to make sure of is that your car is roadworthy before the trial.“Fortunately, the maintenance cost for this car is not that high ... once a car has been properly restored, the maintenance is very low,” Enslin said.He has taken part in the trial about 10 times, the most recent being three years ago when he finished in third place. The car enthusiast has, on several occasions, come second or third, falling behind newer cars.Enslin’s first Milligan rally was in 1997.“The more often you take part in the trial, the easier it becomes to find the right turns and know what to expect, but at the end of the day it’s all about cars and not really about finishing first,” he said. The 50th Bill Milligan Memorial Trial will run from Monday to Thursday, attracting car enthusiasts from around the country to join in the time rally in memory of the founder of the vintage car movement in the Eastern Cape. The participants will meet at the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club in Conyngham Road, Glendinningvale, at 9.30am every morning, where they will be given route schedules, before leaving at minute intervals from 10am, travelling between 122km and 185km a day.The cars will drive up to Humansdorp on the first day, towards Addo on the second day, towards Patensie on the third day and towards the Gamtoos valley on the last day.The routes are kept secret from the participants until 30 minutes before the start of each day.Trial organiser Rodney Idris said: “The cars are in different speed groups, in which competitors place themselves.“One speed group will travel at a maximum of 60km an hour, the second at 75km/h and the third at 90km/h.“The number of cars participating has gone down over the years because these cars are getting rarer.“At some point, we had about 70 cars taking part.”The 2019 rally will see the return of a 1938 Fraser Nash that took part in one of the first two Bill Milligan rallies in the early 1970s.The event will concurrently celebrate the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club’s 50th anniversary and the role of Nelson Mandela Bay and the larger Eastern Cape in the history of SA’s motoring industry.
