Second businessman shot dead in PE

Police say Nkululeko Gcakasi killing may be linked to municipal drain cleaning project

A second businessman was gunned down in Port Elizabeth on Monday.
Nkululeko Gcakasi was shot several times in Tshiwula Street, New Brighton at about 8.20pm.
The killing comes just a few hours after Bay businessman Baba Ningi was shot outside Lifa and Mafa Butchery in Zwide.
Police earlier said they could not rule out the possibility that Ningi's death was linked to allegations of SMMEs not being paid for cleaning municipal drains in December.
After the latest attack, police spokesperson captain Andre Beetge said they had strong suspicions Gcakasi's death also was linked to the same project.
"This has not been confirmed but we have a strong suspicion. We are still busy gathering evidence," Beetge said, adding that Gcakasi appeared to have been shot while sitting in his vehicle.
"There were several bullet holes through the windscreen of his vehicle. It looks like he tried to flee but was then shot again in the street," he said.
Beetge said police patrolling the area heard gunshots and went to investigate.
"They then came across the body and vehicle in the street," he said.
Family and friends gathered at Gcakasi's house refused to speak to the media.
A man, who did not give his name, said the family was in mourning.
