A two-year-old girl is in critical condition after being beaten and dropped off at the Motherwell Clinic by an unknown woman.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said that the girl who was badly beaten and whose identity is unknown, was left at the clinic by an unknown woman at about 11am on Monday.
“She refused to give her own name and only supplied the name 'Mazi' for the little girl,” he said.
“Staff at the clinic immediately had the girl transferred to Dora Nginza Hospital with serious head injuries, she is currently still on life support.”
Beetge said that details pertaining to the injuries or what transpired remains unknown .
“We do not know what she was assaulted with but it is clear from her injuries that it was a vicious attack,” he said.
A case of attempted murder was has been opened.
Beetge said that the hospital contacted them when no parent or guardian arrived to explain what had happened.
“Additional charges such as child abandonment might be added as the probe unfolds.”
Since the case has been opened, it has been taken over by the specialist Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
