Man surrenders after allegedly pointing gun at police
A man who allegedly aimed his firearm at police during a shooting in Port Elizabeth on Monday night surrendered after realising he was outnumbered.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the 31-year-old man was arrested after police spotted him and another man shooting at each other at the Durban Road, Kamma Street intersection in Korsten.
The incident – believed to be related to ongoing gang wars – happened at about 9.30pm on Monday when members of the Operational Command Centre patrolling the area heard gunshots.
“The members immediately responded and saw two men shooting at each other at the intersection. The officials identified themselves and instructed the suspects to drop their firearms and lie down on the ground,” Janse van Rensburg.
“One suspect then pointed his firearm at the members and they returned fire. The suspect dropped the firearm, surrendered and walked towards the members.”
The second gunman fled down Durban Road.
The firearm recovered on the scene was stolen in Port Shepstone in 2012.
“The suspect is detained on three counts of Attempted Murder, Illegal Possession of Firearm, Illegal Possession of ammunition and discharge of firearm in municipal area,” Janse van Rensburg said.
The man will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The case has been taken over by the gang investigation unit while a search for the second suspect continues.
