Bay beaches keep Blue Flag status
Nelson Mandela Bay has retained its Blue Flag status for the city with Hobie, Humewood and Kings beaches able to hoist the banners once again this summer season.
Flags will be flown at 46 beaches, eight marinas and by 12 sustainable tourism boats around South Africa for the upcoming 2018/2019 South African Blue Flag season, which begins on November 1.
The Blue Flag status is an international award given to beaches meeting strict criteria for cleanliness, water and sand quality, environmental education and management.
The Eastern Cape was awarded a Blue Flag for a Cape St Francis marina.
Other Blue Flag beaches in the Eastern Cape are Dolphin Beach in Jeffreys Bay, Hamburg, between East London and Port Alfred, Kariega in Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred’s Kelly’s Beach.
