Stand-in teacher following attack

A substitute teacher has been appointed in the place of an Alpha Primary School teacher who is too afraid to go back to school after a 15-year-old boy allegedly assaulted her last month.
Grade 7 teacher Vera Jewell, 59, sustained a neck injury when the pupil allegedly kicked her in the stomach, pushed her onto desks and threatened her with a pair of scissors.
She has been booked off on stress leave until September 28.
After the incident had been reported to the department of education, a disciplinary hearing was conducted at the school and the boy was suspended.
The pupil has since returned to school and an investigating officer has been appointed.
Education department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said: “There was a disciplinary hearing for the learner and a case against the educator, but the matter is with our labour section trying to [make] a decision [in] both cases.”
