Port Elizabeth murder suspect nabbed

Three alleged hijackers caught just minutes before

A wanted murder suspect - with a firearm hidden in his pants - was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.
He was nabbed just after three other men were caught red-handed, driving a hijacked car in Schauderville.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the three men driving a white Kia Picanto, which had been hijacked in Huemwood earlier this month, were arrested at about 4:30pm.
Shortly afterwards a wanted murder suspect drove past police in a bakkie.
“The K9 unit was patrolling in Schauderville when they spotted a suspicious vehicle, a Picanto, parked at the corners of Glendenning and Dinsmore Roads.
“The vehicle had three men inside and when they spotted police, the attempted to drive off. Police tested the registration number of the car which showed it had been hijacked earlier this month,” he said.
“When the members turned their vehicle around to stop the car, the driver of the Picanto started to drive away.”
Labans said a short car chase ensued while the K9 Unit members called for backup.
Police from the Visible Gang Intervention Team, Gelvandale, Algoa Park and Kabega Park responded to the call for help.
“The members succeeded in stopping the car in Lawler Street and arrested all three, aged between 19 and 23.”
Labans said residents became “hostile”during the arrest, prompting police to take the suspects and the hijacked car to the nearby Gelvandale police station.
“While leaving and driving in Dinsmore Street, the Visible Gang Intervention Team members noticed a black bakkie, with a wanted suspect inside.
“Another brief chase ensued and the bakkie was pulled over. The suspect got of the vehicle and as police pulled the suspect’s hand out of his pants, they found a 9mm pistol tucked inside,” Labans said.
Labans said the 29-year-old man was wanted for a murder and robbery which took place in Lawler Street, Schauderville, two weeks ago.
During the murder and robbery, Milton Memphis, 42, was shot several times while sitting outside his house with a friend.
“It is alleged that three suspects, armed with firearms, shot Memphis after stealing his gold rings, music systems and cash,” Labans said.
He confirmed that all four arrested suspects were believed to have gang affiliations.
Mount Road Cluster Commander Major General Thembisile Patekile said they would not rest until criminals were flushed out of the community and were behind bars.
All four suspects are due to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Thursday for their respective charges.
