Beach murder accused to conduct own defence
A homeless man who is alleged to have murdered an unidentified car guard at the beachfront is adamant that he will conduct his own defence.
This is despite numerous requests by the state for him to use a lawyer from Legal Aid South Africa.
Sivuyile Batyi, 36, who has no fixed address, appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder.
Batyi has indicated his intention to enter a guilty plea. He said he needed two days to go through the copies of the docket and witness statements. The matter was postponed to Friday. Batyi’s court appearance stemmed from an incident on April 25, when he allegedly fatally stabbed a 34-year-old car guard.
