Jansenville drug bust after car fails to indicate
Alert cops confiscate R50 000 worth of mandrax
Police nabbed a suspected drug dealer after the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over for failing to indicate while overtaking a truck.
The bust took place shortly after 5pm on Wednesday when police officials travelling on the R75 spotted a VW Polo overtaking a truck without indicating.
Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said police officers immediately ordered the driver to pull off the road.
“As the police officials approached the vehicle, they noticed the passenger trying to push a bag underneath his seat.
"The police officers questioned the two occupants of the vehicle and obtained permission to search the vehicle,” she said.
“The officials discovered a bag containing 1 001 mandrax tablets underneath the passenger seat."
Swart said the a 41-year-old from Jansenville was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of mandrax.
The estimated street value of the drugs is more than R50 000.
Asked why the driver was not arrested, Swart said that after interrogation, it appeared that the suspect was hitching a lift to Jansenville.
Acting Uitenhage cluster commander Brigadier Ronald Koll commended the officers for their alertness and for ensuring illegal drugs were taken of the streets of Jansenville.
The man is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
