Traffic official arrested after accidentally shooting girlfriend

A Provincial Traffic officer was arrested this morning after allegedly shooting his girlfriend by mistake during a heated argument.

Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said that the 40-year-old traffic official, who police will only name after he is formally charged in court, was arrested at about 9:30am.

Ehuliswa Klassen, 30, was shot and killed inside the traffic official’s home in Jacob Street, Humansdorp.

“It is alleged that the suspect and his girlfriend (Klassen) got into an argument in the early hours of this morning at their home. It is alleged that the girlfriend (Klassen) got hold of the suspect's service pistol and as the suspect tried to take it from her, a shot went off,” Swart said.

Klassen died on the scene after being shot in the stomach.

“At this stage it is unclear as to what they were arguing about. The matter is being investigated and the officials firearm has been confiscated and sent to the ballistic unit for testing,” Swart added.

The man is due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrates' Court today for murder.
