Wanted suspect arrested after shoot-out with police

A notorious suspect wanted in connection with house robberies in both the Kwazakele area and Mount Road Cluster Station areas, was arrested yesterday after shooting at the police.

This comes after alert Kwazakele Crime Prevention Unit members spotted the suspect as a passenger in a white VW Polo in Bertram Road, Kwazakele at about 3.30pm.

Police followed the vehicle, which  temporarily disappeared from view. When they caught up with it, only the driver was in the vehicle.

At that point the suspect, 26, was spotted  on foot going towards Missionvale, Uitenhage Road. Police said  when they approached him, he produced a firearm and started shooting at them while running away.

Police returned fire and the suspect then complied with orders to lie down, and was arrested. A 9mm Z88 pistol and 6 rounds of ammunition were found in his possession.

No one was injured in the incident.

The suspect will be appearing in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court tomorrow  on charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
