R10m Walmer sports field nears completion

A brand new sports field along Walmer’s Buffelsfontein Road is seen as a beacon of hope for the youth in the area, as it is believed it will keep them off the streets and help harness their sporting skills.

The sports ground, which is about 90% complete, has two soccer fields and a rugby field. The entire area is fenced off. The full project, with the remaining work that has to be completed, will cost about R10-million.

Although the project has created excitement among the youth of Walmer, they are waiting eagerly for it to be completed and opened to the public.

Walmer Real Madrid FC soccer player Lisolethu Zote, 24, said the area used to be a public open space.

“There was only a rugby field, but it was not in a good condition for use. Last year, the municipality added two soccer fields,” he said.

“We were excited because we only had one sports field in that area of Walmer Links.

“Having the community ground means that tournaments will no longer have to be played at Walmer High School.
