Rival groups clash at police station over contracts
NELSON Mandela Bay ward councillor Nomajama Benya met small business leaders at the Walmer police station yesterday in a bid to quell tensions between rival groups over construction projects in the area.
While the intention was to meet with a select few leaders to find an amicable solution to the violent relationship between the opposing forums, the Walmer SMME group – led by businessman Luvuyo Popo – fled from the station after yet another scuffle ensued.
Yesterday’s meeting followed a clash the day before when blows were exchanged over who had the right to build in Walmer township.
Each group felt strongly that they were entitled to civil works contracts.
