Delight as sick toddler receives bicycle from foundation

A three-year-old girl’s dream came true at the weekend when Reach for a Dream used proceeds from the Herald Volkswagen Cycle Tour to buy the pink bicycle she had been dreaming of.

She later used it to take part in this weekend’s 500m Powerade Toddler Dash.

Sophumelelo, or Soso as she is affectionately called, is suffering from an undisclosed life-threatening condition.

On Friday, the Nelson Mandela Bay branch of Reach for a Dream used proceeds from last year’s cycle tour to make Soso’s dream a reality. “She had a few dreams but the biggest one was to receive a pink bicycle with a little basket in front where she could place her doll. She also wanted to watch a Tom and Jerry movie on a big screen,” Reach for a Dream’s fundraising events coordinator Michelle van Huyssteen said.

Arrangements were made with No 5 Boutique Hotel in Summerstrand for Soso and a friend to watch the movie at the hotel’s theatre.

“When they finished the movie and came out of the theatre the bike was outside waiting for her. She was ecstatic,” she said.

Van Huyssteen said the organisation had used proceeds from last year’s cycle tour in order to buy the bike from CycloPro, which is one of this year’s event sponsors.
