Shooting victim wants answers

A Port Elizabeth mother who was shot two months ago in what she believes was an attack connected to allegations of RDP housing corruption in Missionvale, is demanding answers from the police and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

Eunice Classen, 33, a member of a steering committee which oversees the allocation of RDP houses in that area, was shot in her home in November by an unidentified gunman.

She said the shooting followed weeks of threats, intimidation and the stoning of her home by a mob demanding that she resign from the committee.

Classen said the committee was mandated to verify that people receiving houses were legal beneficiaries.

This comes as allegations of housing corruption and the manipulation of beneficiary lists are so widespread that Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC Helen SaulsAugust has committed to spending the next two months probing how thousands of people around the province were able to occupy houses to which they were not legally entitled.
