Bay toilet row set to go international

[caption id="attachment_35142" align="alignright" width="405"] PUBLIC INCONVENIENCE: Pastor Peter Claasen, of Kriekie Valley, Despatch, stands in front of the filthy toilet cluster, which the community says is unfit for use as it has not been cleaned in years. Picture: JUDY DE VEGA[/caption] DESPERATE township residents would rather squat in the bush than use a cluster of public toilets. This is because, they claim, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has failed to clean the facilities in the DA ward in Despatch for three years. Now, the area's councillor, Francois Greyling, wants to approach the United Nations International Commission on Human Rights over sanitation for residents from Kriekie Valley, Mooi Valley and Manshashe Village. The facilities, at one stage, were used by scores of families. But now the filth, stench, an outbreak of infections and an insect plague are forcing them to use the bush instead. - Estelle Ellis
