Fear grips township

INNOCENT people are being caught in the slipstream of the gang war raging in New Brighton – and terrified residents fear no one will be safe until the gangsters wipe each other out.

On Monday night, a lone gunman walked into Chippa's Tavern in Nibe Street and mowed down seven people.

Three people died at the scene and, of the four wounded, one is still in a critical condition in hospital.

Some of them were shot in the back as they tried to flee.

Residents said they had often woken up in the past two weeks to what sounded like a machine-gun firing.

They blamed gangsters in the area who were embroiled in a turf war and had carried out a series of revenge killings. - Herald Reporters
