Residents act against drugs

THOUSANDS of Uitenhage residents sent out a strong warning to drug dealers yesterday that their days were numbered.

The residents – including parents and children – marched through the streets going from drug post to drug post in the Rosedale area as part of a drug awareness campaign spearheaded by churches and community leaders and supported by police and schools in the area.

The 3000 protesters carried posters reading "Dealers your days are numbered" as they marched with church brigade bands for 2km from the corner of Acacia Avenue and Kingfisher Street, escorted by a police motorcade while traffic officials blocked off several main roads.

They stopped outside seven drug dens for about 10 minutes each time, shouting "enough is enough" as the band played. - Gareth Wilson
