Suspects of hijack and tavern attack arrested

TWO suspected hijackers were arrested after gunfire was exchanged in a late-night car chase through Kwazakhele and Zwide in Nelson Mandela Bay, which led to the recovery of a stolen VW Polo.

According to detectives, at least 50 shots were exchanged between police and the gunmen. The Polo has 10 bullet holes.

The car is believed to have been involved in a drive-by shooting at a tavern in Dora Street, New Brighton, on Tuesday.

Later that evening, police raided the tavern and arrested the two men who had been shot at on charges of being in possession of nine stolen firearms – among them an LM5 assault rife. It is suspected they were planning a revenge attack. - Gareth Wilson
