Horrific scenes of elephant abuse

THE National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has laid animal cruelty charges against a former Eastern Cape elephant sanctuary and its management after it received video footage showing horrific maltreatment of young elephants, allegedly filmed at the Woody Cape sanctuary.

But striking back swiftly, the former owners of Alexandria Elephants of Eden (EOE) immediately confirmed that abuse of elephants had taken place at the sanctuary, but pointed out that this took place six years ago in 2008.

They said the elephants involved were in the process of being purchased by a Mossel Bay game reserve owner whose own staff had abused the animals.  - Shaun Gillham and Tremaine van Aardt
