Cop accused of killing stocktheft witness

AN EASTERN Cape police officer faces a charge of murder following the killing of a state witness in a stocktheft case.

Constable Dion Allexandra, who is based at the Maluti police station, and Mfanelo Phindela were arrested for the killing in Maluti near Matatiele.

The two were arrested late last month after being linked to the November murder of Simphiwe Sintu. The victim, whose body was found in an open field, was said to be a state witness in a stocktheft case.

Mount Fletcher police spokesman Lieutenant Rafael Motloung said the accused made their second bail application at the Maluti Magistrate's Court on Friday and were released on R3000 bail each.

"Their case was postponed to June 13 as police are busy with further investigations," he said. Motloung said it was alleged that the two had conspired to kill Sintu after he decided to confess to his involvement in a stocktheft case.

He said a disciplinary hearing would be held for the constable.
