'DA tells lies about Fihla'

EASTERN Cape ANC bosses have launched a scathing attack against the DA for "peddling lies" that Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Ben Fihla has resigned and is set to be replaced by Smuts Ngonyama, who recently left COPE.

Fuelling speculation that the 82-year-old mayor was leaving two years before the end of his term, the DA said yesterday it had reliably learnt the ANC would be pushing for "hired gun" Ngonyama to replace Fihla.

It is the second public statement by the DA's Bay caucus leader, councillor Retief Odendaal, in a week, in which he claimed Fihla's departure was imminent. - Rochelle de Kock
