Huge losses due to ageing infrastructure

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality lost R218-million over the past nine months due to ageing infrastructure and electricity theft.

The staggering figure was revealed at a budget and treasury portfolio committee meeting yesterday by the electricity and energy department's new director, Silby Mathew.

It comes after the Bay's last audit report showed the city had lost R224-million due to illegal electrical connections in the 2012-13 financial year.– Rochelle de Kock
