Bid to appeal against five life sentences for rape rejected

AN EFFORT by a convicted serial rapist who applied for leave to appeal against his five life sentences was dismissed in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday.

On May 13 2009 Sindelo Thafeni, 38, was convicted on 18 of the 21 counts he was facing. These included a staggering seven counts of rape, robbery, attempted murder and assault. However yesterday, nearly five years after his conviction, he brought an application for leave to appeal against the conviction. It was dismissed by Judge Elna Revelas. - Lee-Anne Butler
