Probe into jail cellphones

CORRECTIONAL Services officials found 146 cellphones during a search at the St Albans Prison, police have revealed.

Spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder said the cellphones were found during a search by an emergency support team last month and police were now investigating the cellphones' details, including the type, what information they held, where they came from and how they landed up in the possession of prisoners.

Rheeder said police were also investigating the nature of the authorisation given to the search teams. More than 100 prisoners were beaten and abused during the search. - Estelle Ellis
