Family relieved as rapist cop gets life in prison

A DISGRACED Eastern Cape police officer who raped a teenage girl when she went to report a case of sexual harassment to him has been sentenced to life in prison.

The policeman, Warrant Officer Lolo Mlambomni, 45, was found guilty in the Zwelitsha Regional Court late last year and was sentenced in March.

Mdantsane cluster police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku confirmed the sentence.

The victim, now 17, is a matric pupil. Her mother wept as she recalled the day of the incident and how it affected her daughter, who became a laughing stock at school.

She said rumours were being spread that the victim, aged 12 at the time of the incident, was in love with Mlambomni.

The mother of three, who miscarried because of stress, praised the police but said she had battled to trust them to do their job.

"Our fear was that the case would be swept under the carpet, but we were wrong." - Bongani Fuzile
