Rugby officials face axe

SPRINGBOK women's rugby captain Mandisa Williams and 11 other Border rugby development officers will lose their jobs at the end of this month.

This comes after the Border Rugby Football Union (BRFU) gave them notices a week ago saying it intended to retrench the 12.

Union general manager Dumisani Mhani said two weeks' remuneration for each completed year of service would be paid as "prescribed by law".

A development officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the retrenchment was a result of Border rugby politics.

The officers also claimed they were being targeted because they had raised issues about the abuse of vehicles.

Mhani confirmed that the 12 had been served with letters, but declined further comment.

Border rugby is not new to controversy.

Last month, the South African Rugby Union (Saru) placed BRFU under administration after a letter dated February 20 gave the union until March 14 to get its house in order.
