Barber to sue over 'brutality'

A PORT Elizabeth barber who claimed police brutality after he was allegedly yanked, stomped on and kicked by officers after fleeing into a school has indicated his intention to sue the police for R100000.

Attorney Lineen Swarts, who is representing Clayton Andrews, 35, refused to give details of the claim but confirmed that a letter of demand had been sent to both national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

David Barrit from Mthethwa's office failed to respond by the time of going to press, despite an earlier undertaking, while Phiyega's spokesman could not be reached.

In a letter seen by The Herald, Swarts alleges his client was assaulted by police officers who shot at him, grabbed him and threw him to the ground where he was kicked and trampled in broad daylight. - Hendrick Mphande
