Drag races enter mainstream in Bay

THE smell of burning tyres and petrol, the adrenalin of the lights changing before a launch, complemented by squeaky clean “show and shine” cars lining drag strips, has seen the organised street car culture taking a quantum leap in Nelson Mandela Bay.

And enthusiasts are craving more: Upcoming trends such as sound-off, stance and “show and shine” are growing the classic drag racing scene to accommodate spectators from every walk of life. This was evident at the recent MSA Strictly Street meet hosted at Aldo Scribante Raceway, which attracted nearly 8 000 spectators.

Fan Runeshan Dolley said in his nine years of drag racing he has seen first-hand how the phenomenon has exploded in the Bay.
