Helenvale kids march against violence

“WE are the future of Helenvale – please stop killing us.”

These words were chanted through the streets of Helenvale yesterday as 300 little feet from Helenvale and Hillcrest primary schools marched against gang violence in Port Elizabeth.

The Grade 6 and 7 pupils, and some teachers, waved placards bearing messages portraying their fear of growing up in Helenvale.

Some of the placards read “Safer learners are better learners”, “Save our children” and “Silence the violence”.

But older trouble-makers in the area, waving what appeared to be plastic bags of mandrax, threatened to throw bricks at the children.
