Warder in ‘miracle’ escape as prisoner grabs gun in court

COURT officials watched in horror yesterday as a convicted thief grabbed a prison warder’s gun and tried to shoot him in the head.

He pulled the trigger twice, but the gun did not fire because the magazine had been removed.

“It was simply a miracle when the gun did not go off,” said a senior court official who was present in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court when the drama unfolded.

It was shortly before the lunch adjournment in Court 22 when Luciano Meyer, 25, allegedly pulled a firearm out of 36-year-old warder Mxolisi Mkonjeni’s holster.
