VP pupil scoops award

GRADE 11 Victoria Park High School pupil Sarah Rautenbach scooped third place in the "Healthy World Climate Change Hero School 2012" annual competition.
This national competition is sponsored by Pick n Pay.
Sarah's achievement was for submitting a portfolio outlining the projects the ECO club (Environmental Awareness Organisation) has carried out over the past year at the school, and also how she could encourage other pupils to "think green".
The ECO club creates an awareness of, and takes a stand against global warming and climate change. Members have hosted a successful Up-cycle Fashion Show, continuously carry out neighbourhood and beach clean-ups, have a recycling project for paper, cardboard, tin and plastics, collect plastic bread tags for recycling and ultimately to fund a wheelchair for a needy recipient.
They also have a thriving vegetable garden and run fun awareness events which celebrate World Environment Day, Arbour Day and also Coastal Clean-up Day.
As president of the ECO club at Victoria Park, Sarah encourages the ECO club members to put countless hours of hard work and dedication into making a difference through sustainable projects. This helps the entire community's environment, extending further than just the school. This is the first time this award has been awarded to an Eastern Cape school in the 10 years that this Healthy World Climate Change challenge has been held.
Sarah wins R2000 for herself and R1000 for the ECO club at the school.
