Newton Park pool saga splashes on

NELSON Mandela Bay's beleaguered top-class Newton Park swimming pool facility is set to remain closed until autumn following a delayed municipal supply chain management process and a looming legal battle over repairs.

In the face of a sweltering summer and following the end of the recent school holidays, the DA has slammed the continued closure of the city's leading competitive and recreational swimming facility, which is not only used for major galas and synchronised swimming, among other water sports, but also as a training facility for events such as Ironman.

DA councillor Andrew Whitfield said the pool had been closed to the public for more than six months, adding "there appears to be no end in sight".

The pool was closed for routine maintenance in July last year, and when defective tiling was discovered along the floor and walls of the pool, it was closed indefinitely.
