SMME workers storm meeting

HUNDREDS of small business construction workers hijacked a Nelson Mandela Bay municipal staff meeting yesterday, forcing newly appointed city manager Mpilo Mbambisa to listen to their grievances.

Mbambisa was made to adjourn his meeting with infrastructure and engineering directorate staff at the Pieter Rademeyer Hall in Algoa Park, to introduce himself. Instead he was locked in talks with small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) leaders for hours.

The small business workers demanded that the municipality "unbundle" construction contracts, which means instead of hiring one company in which intern subcontractors work, the municipality should directly hire multiple companies for each project.
