Diver's sobriety questioned by defence counsel

A CONVICTED Port Elizabeth man's accusations of intimidation yesterday prompted a defence advocate to question his sobriety in court.
Paul du Rand, a diver who pleaded guilty to the illegal pillaging of scrap metal from shipwrecks, told the Humansdorp Regional Court that his co-accused and their attorney tried to intimidate him by punching holes into his rubber duck.
Du Rand, 53, became the first person in South Africa convicted under the National Heritage Resources Act when he turned on his co-accused to become a state witness on Monday. A separation of trials was ordered and he was accordingly convicted.
