Mom checkmates officialdom


NOT even a travel ban was going to stand in the way of a Kenyan mother's determination to see her daughter play chess against the continent's best at the 2013 African Youth Chess Tournament in Port Elizabeth this week.


Sonia Aggarwal-Hiranandani, from Nairobi, tackled her country's Ministry of Sport, the Kenyan Chess Federation and the International Chess Federation (Fide) to have the travel ban lifted to ensure a safe passage for her daughter, Jia, and eight other Kenyan players, officials and parents.


The ban, imposed more than a month ago, was intensified following the terror attack at Westgate Mall last month. At least 67 people died in the siege of the complex.
