PE Tramways plans on track

THE first phase of the multimillion-rand redevelopment of the old PE Tramways building in Port Elizabeth is nearing completion, with beautiful arched windows installed, and the elevation of the ground floors.

The skeleton of the building, close to the harbour, is shaping up and Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) planning and development manager Dorelle Sapere said they were "happy with the progress".

The R36-million development is split into two phases. The first phase, which includes the renovation of the building, is expected to be completed by January. The second phase, the finishing of the interior, is expected to be completed by December next year. The third phase includes a pedestrian bridge from Produce Street to the new building and is scheduled for the 2014/15 financial year.

The redevelopment forms part of the envisaged Baakens Valley-Bridge Street development, which will eventually connect with the planned waterfront development.
