MEC backs down to doctors over hospital complex

AFTER nine months of trying to reroute community service doctors to assist at the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex, the MEC for Health, Sicelo Gqobana, yesterday conceded defeat, with department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo saying they were now letting the issue go.

Gqobana promised earlier this year that the complex would get 15 community service doctors on a three-month rotation.

Kupelo said some community service doctors who worked in the central part of the province did agree to do the rotation but others refused.

He said both the hospital managers and the community service doctors were "very strong" in their resistance to working at the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex.
