On-the-ball women love new radio jobs

TWO sports-loving Eastern Cape women are making a name for themselves in a new Johannesburg-based visual radio station that focuses on sports.

Diana Fensham, 23, of Walmer, Port Elizabeth, and Kate Nokwe, 24, of Mthatha, are part of Darren Scott’s radio station, Ballz Visual Radio, which launched in April.

Fensham co-hosts the noon to 2pm show, Gearz, with Sasha Martinengo, while Nokwe is hosting Ballz from 2pm to 6pm with Scott, Simon Hill and John Walland.

Fensham, a former Collegiate pupil who studied for a BComm Accounting at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, said she was having the time of her life on radio.

"It is awesome. There is never a boring day, every day is fun. The people I work with are just fantastic,” she said.

"I also did some work for SuperSport. I became part of the team through John Walland and about two weeks ago I came to the Ballz studio and I was set up with Sasha [Martinengo].

"I worked really hard to get my break in the industry. One must never give up and just keep going,” the former provincial golfer said.

Nokwe, who was in the top 12 of SuperSport’s Lady Ragga competition last year, also said she was enjoying every minute of her time on Ballz.

"I am loving it. I came to Johannesburg to follow my dream because broadcasting is my passion. For two years I was on Link FM in East London and when I went to UJ [University of Johannesburg], I was on the sports desk on UJ FM.

"I wanted to be a professional baseball player, but [the sport] is not well developed in the country. I am definitely a sports person. I love working with the people I am working with – Darren Scott is a genius,” the public relations graduate said.

Scott said he wanted to "bring back the fun into radio”.

"We are looking to have a lot of fun while working. We are still new but we are growing slowly,” he said.

"We have a lot of sports personalities approaching us. We have two shows at the moment and we specialise in dance music on weekends.”

Ballz Visual Radio operates from Monday to Friday. To listen to the station go to www.ballz.co.za
