SKINNERBEK | All things art to killer jazz sets
Poet even opens home to Sunday jam sessions
Hi dolls! I don’t know about you but the past weekend has definitely been a fun-filled one for your party-hopping gossip girl.
Whether you were out and about or tucked indoors and missed out on the Bay’s weekend vibes, Skinners has all the 411 just for you.
On Saturday, the much-anticipated fourth annual Colours of You SA Creative Festival finally hit the Bay’s shores and saw scores of art lovers visiting The Gallery on Produce Street.
When I say the do was packed, I mean as the sun set, even more people surfaced like vampires avoiding daylight and coming out to dance the night out.
The festival was a combination of all things art and design-driven, from fashion, music, dance, to live art and hair styling.
This is also where fashion designer and former Project Runway SA contestant Gugu Peteni launched her latest fashion range.
I mean, she made it onto Project Runway SA, so surely the girl came all the way through with the ‘drip’.
Skinners also had the pleasure of watching live art by pseudo illusionist Luke Rudman, after years of seeing only complete artworks on the ‘gram’.
Some featured exhibitors included the talented Lihle Mtya, the people’s barber Jesse Gallant, painter Josh, fashion designer Evans Zemba and a lot more who exhibited, while a lineup of local DJs kept us on our feet.
As much as I’d like to break it all down for you, we don’t have all day but did I mention the food from the food trucks? Yum!
It took some recovering on Sunday morning before making my way to the LoveHouse Private Session featuring Zimsto eRoofini at PoeticSoul’s house on Sunday afternoon.
The jam sessions are the brainchild of the poet who took it upon herself to provide a space for people to enjoy intimate Sunday jam sessions in her spacious lounge.
Let Skinners admit she was a bit surprised (and pleased) to be welcomed by an usher and offered a drink on arrival.
I mean it’s not an effort I would expect from someone who has already opened up her private home to outsiders.
We see your efforts for the culture, guurl! We see you.
Anywho, the day’s guest performer was the lively Zimsto eRoofini, who shared the stage with guitarist Bongani Tulwana, giving us an acoustic set fit for a Sunday chillaz.
Of course, with Zimsto it is never just any other performance – the sister delivered on with her capturing stage presence and . . . wait for it . . . outfit changes. Yes, she did THAT!
My favourite thing about the session is the time we get to ask questions after the performance and your Skinners finally found the answer to achieving Zimsto’s awesome body – just go to the gym like she does every day, bruh!
Some guests at the session were comedian TD Jokes, musician LoveChild and music lovers Xolelwa Vandala and Mel van Rayner.
Skinners enjoyed another jam session at Black Impala Tshisanyama in Deal Party on Tuesday, where jazzman Temba Ncetani celebrated his birthday.
As expected, the birthday man welcomed everyone with a killer jazz set alongside his NMU band mates and, at some point, the talented Dumza Maswana and NMU chorister Babalwa Tshula.
Also at the do were singers Nosisi Mavela, Nomabotwe Mtimkulu, along with Simamkele Kolele.
Ciao!
